Many Romanians living abroad return home during this period to celebrate Easter with their families and friends. A large number of them also bring along new friends or families formed in their adopted countries to experience the Romanian way of life and visit the most beautiful places in the country.
98% of Romanians living abroad recommend visiting Romania to their friends
There are over 4 million Romanians living abroad, and 98% of them urge their new acquaintances in their adopted countries to visit Romania, according to a study conducted by MKOR Consulting among Romanian communities in over 60 countries.
This means nearly 4 million genuine ambassadors for Romanian tourism scattered across all corners of the world, passionately telling foreigners about the beautiful places and things that can be seen in Romania.
Mountain areas, Transylvania, and Maramureș are the destinations Romanians talk about most to their friends in their adopted countries
When asked which destinations they recommend to their foreign friends, respondents of the MKOR study found it difficult to settle on just one place. Thus, they ended up mentioning over 70 destinations and landmarks, ranging from cities and resorts to mountain trails and Black Sea beaches, as well as natural, cultural, and historical tourist attractions.
”There are so many! I would suggest a tour of the country covering cities such as Cluj, Sibiu, Sighișoara, Brașov, Timișoara, Oradea, but also the mountains (on foot or by transport). Additionally, I would send them to Maramureș, where traditions are very prominent. I would also go out with them for a May 1st barbecue for the unique flavor of ‘mititei’ with mustard :))” — Edgar, Canada.
Mountain areas are the destinations that most Romanians in the diaspora recommend to their acquaintances abroad. 39% of these Romanian tourism ambassadors guide them to visit mountain resorts and trails, with the most frequently mentioned being the attractions in the Prahova Valley.
Nearly a quarter (23%) of those living abroad tell their friends about the beauties of Transylvania, enticing them to visit.
Maramureș is the third most recommended destination to foreigners by those living abroad: 13% of them urge their friends to visit the Maramureș area, often mentioned alongside the Merry Cemetery in Săpânța.
In addition to the three most frequently recommended tourist destinations, the top list also includes Bucharest, Sibiu, Moldova with its monasteries, the Danube Delta, and the Black Sea Coast, each mentioned by 12% of the respondents in the research conducted by MKOR.
The study “Romania’s Ambassador Brands” was conducted by MKOR Consulting between September and November 2017, on a sample of 1,115 respondents from the Romanian diaspora in 63 countries worldwide.
